Personal Loan EMI Calculator - Calculate Monthly EMI

Loan Amount:
Interest Rate: % Annual
Loan Tenure: months

Personal Loan EMI Calculator for Monthly Payment and Interest Cost

This personal loan EMI calculator estimates repayment for an unsecured installment loan. It shows how loan amount, annual interest and tenure in months affect EMI, total interest and outstanding balance. It can support comparisons for debt consolidation, medical or family expenses, education, travel, home improvement or another permitted purpose, but it cannot judge whether borrowing is suitable.

Personal loan calculator inputs

  • Loan amount is the principal sanctioned or actually financed.
  • Annual interest rate is the nominal reducing-balance rate.
  • Loan tenure in months is the number of scheduled installments.

Results and monthly amortization

The output shows monthly EMI, total principal and total interest. The chart compares principal and interest, while the monthly schedule shows opening balance, interest, principal repaid, EMI, cumulative payment and closing balance. Review total interest before focusing on the payment size.

Personal loan EMI formula

For principal P, monthly rate r and n installments:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1]

Monthly interest equals opening principal × r, and the remaining EMI reduces principal. At zero interest, EMI equals P ÷ n. The model assumes a standard fully amortizing reducing-balance loan.

Why personal loans require careful cost comparison

Because personal loans are commonly unsecured, pricing can be higher than secured credit and can vary by borrower. Compare annualized cost or APR, processing fee, insurance, documentation, net disbursed amount, total repayment, prepayment terms, penal charges and late-payment consequences. A lender that deducts fees upfront may disburse less cash than the face-value principal on which EMI is calculated.

Key Facts Statement and loan offer review

For covered Indian retail loans, RBI's KFS framework is intended to present key loan information and all-in annualized cost in an understandable format. Match the KFS with the sanction letter and repayment schedule. Do not rely on a phone message or app screen that displays only EMI. Verify the regulated lender, grievance contact and account into which money will be disbursed and repaid.

Responsible use cases

  • Debt consolidation: useful only when total cost falls and old revolving accounts are not reused.
  • Emergency expense: compare with insurance, employer support, savings and lower-cost regulated alternatives.
  • Home improvement: compare unsecured cost with a secured option while considering collateral risk and fees.
  • Education or skill development: test EMI against conservative post-study income rather than an optimistic salary.
  • Planned purchase: saving first may be cheaper when the purchase can wait.

Debt consolidation is not debt elimination

A lower EMI may come from a longer tenure and higher lifetime cost. Add the settlement amount of every old debt, new loan fees and any foreclosure cost. A consolidation plan works only if expensive balances are actually closed and new borrowing is controlled.

Affordability and emergency buffer

Compare EMI with reliable net income after essential expenses, existing debt, insurance and minimum saving. Do not assume every bonus will arrive. Keep an emergency reserve so one disruption does not trigger another high-cost loan. If EMI becomes difficult, contact the regulated lender early rather than using an unverified loan app to make payments.

Prepayment and floating-rate changes

A prepayment can reduce future interest, but the allowed method and charge depend on product and current rules. For covered floating-rate EMI-based personal loans, RBI guidance addresses communication and options when rates reset. Ask whether the lender changes EMI, tenure or both and obtain an updated schedule.

Digital loan safety and data privacy

Before using an app, identify the regulated bank or NBFC actually extending credit and verify the app through that entity's official website or current RBI resources. Read permission requests and avoid apps seeking unrelated access to contacts, photos or messages. The disbursal and repayment path should match official terms; never send money to a personal account based on a collection message. Keep the KFS, sanction letter, statements and closure confirmation. If a claim, charge or recovery practice is disputed, use the lender's grievance channel and the applicable regulated complaint process rather than sharing additional credentials or OTPs.

When a personal loan may be a poor fit

Uncertain discretionary spending, recurring monthly deficits and speculative investing are weak reasons for unsecured borrowing because the EMI remains due regardless of the outcome. If the need is caused by an ongoing income-expense gap, first identify a sustainable budget change; another loan can postpone rather than solve the problem. For a medical, education or business purpose, compare purpose-specific regulated products whose pricing, repayment structure or protections may be more suitable.

Limitations

The calculator excludes fees, taxes, insurance, broken-period interest, daily accrual, moratorium, payment delay and rate reset. It assumes the stated principal is available and installments are paid on time. Approval and pricing depend on lender underwriting and credit profile.

Frequently asked questions

Why is APR higher than the interest rate?

APR or annualized cost can include fees and other charges in addition to nominal interest.

Does a lower EMI mean a cheaper personal loan?

No. Compare the same principal and tenure, net disbursal and total repayment.

Can the calculator predict approval?

No. It estimates repayment only; the lender assesses eligibility and rate.
